When Sewing Turns Bad!

Q: How do you know when sewing turns bad? A: A needle goes through your fingernail, and all the way through your finger. The picture above is a very bent needle that I pulled out of my finger earlier today after a sewing mishap.

No, the battle wound does not look big, in fact you may need a magna-fine glass to see anything other than a dot on my nail. The pain is much worse. After passing out twice, and throwing up this is the measly little battle wound I have been left with.

You may think it odd to pass out and get sick, however, I have always been known to pass out when I get really hurt. It has come to the point that I can recognize it way before it happens which gives me plenty of time to dive to the floor and lay down. I use to hit the counter on my way down as a child while my mom did my hair.

I don't know why I pass out so much, I am in no way bothered by blood, and stuff. It is a mystery.
Oh, here is a picture of the needle still in my machine after I removed my finger from it. Luckily my nephew's Birthday gift did not get any of the blood, sweat, or tears that were literally involved with making it for him.

The nicest thing about my injury that was after I passed out the first time, Summer came to my rescue and asked if I wanted her to say a prayer. She amazed me that she even thought of saying one. It was such a sincere, and thoughtful prayer as well. I am grateful to her for administering her own first aid to me as I really did need some sort of help.

Lesson learned: Don't be in such a hurry, and keep your fingers out of the way of the needle.

O.k......I may have to sit down on the floor to keep from passing out myself after seeing that needle! Ooh! Hope your finger gets better soon! =D

Oh Melisa, I can't even imagine. I think I would have done more than just pass out and throw-up. WOW, tiny battle scar or not, your are seriously one tough chick.

Ouch! I did that once. I was working on a commercial machine that cuts the thread for you, and a little arm swings past the needle to move the thread (it's cut under neath). I hit my thumb on that arm many times, but one time it hurt really bad, and I looked at my thumb and it was bleeding. The needle went through the tip of my thumb, and I had a wound similar to yours. I can imagine yours hurts worse, I barely nicked the tip, but it went right through the nail like yours.

Holy Cow Melissa, that is some dangerous work you are doing. It is too bad you can't take a sick leave day and lay around and eat bon bons.
It is fun to read your blog, you are always impressing me to do and try more things.
Hope all is well. Say hi to my fellow Canadian!

Dang- that stinks. That is something my mom always warned me off, because that exact thing happened to her. I hope it gets to feel better soon.

I'm so sorry Melissa! I swear, this is my fault! Hope you're feeling better. Now you have an awesome sewing story to tell everyone. :)

I did that once but it was with a staple and it hurt like the dickens. Only mine went through the finger and stopped at the nail. I had to get xrays and everything because the doctor couldn't tell if it hit the bone or not. I actually had to walk around with the thing stuck in my finger for hours. I don't blame you for passing out. I would have too. Just remember to get back on the horse. You are too good at sewng to not go back to it. At least Summer was there for you and held it together. You have to love how tough kids are.

That happened to a friend of mine in home economics while I was there, and my Mom who used to sew as much as I understand you do, had that happen when she was sewing a petticoat for me. OUCH!
